My favorite part of the past two weeks has been reading about the Holistic Self Awareness Approach. I myself try to adapt these same life-styles to my every day life, so it was nice to "give it a name!"
I think the key with Health and Wellness as a whole concept, is for people without addictions and dependency problems to live such a good life - that it seems more appealing and attractive than that of the drinkers/partiers/drug users. I was a part of the "party crowd" in high school and I remember laughing at all of the kids who played sports and were athletic. Healthy things like eating a balanced diet, drinking water instead of pop, and getting a good nights sleep were things that the hoitey-toitey stuck up kids with nosy parents (who were actively involved in their lives and knew where they were an what they were doing) did.
I graduated high school almost 13 years ago, am raising 3 kids and I look back on my behaviors and beliefs as a teenager and laugh. I don't want my kids to do what I did and be a part of the party crowd - after reading about this in the book I realized that I've been trying to apply the "holistic self awareness approach" on my own - and model for my children that a healthy life is better then what they might see their peers living/doing/acting when they're teenagers.
The other part of the readings I especially found interesting which are also my 3 new word and definitions were the Model's of Addiction:
1. The Moral Model - the belief that people abuse alcohol because they choose to do so.
2. The Disease Model- the belief that people abuse alcohol because of some biologically caused condition
3. Characterological or personality predisposition model - the view of chemical dependency as a symptom of problems in the development or operation of the system of needs, motives, and attitudes within the individual
Addiction and dependency really are complex diseases that involve an infinite number of combinations of biological, psychological and sociological factors depending on the individual. The risk factors on page 67 of our text was fascinating.
As far as my participation in the discussion, I was logging on at least every other day looking for feedback to my original post. Hopefully with the next Module more people post in the correct section and sooner so there could be more of an active discussion. I do believe I put in the correct amount of time and effort into this module.
